Painful start; great finish

I think it was back in the 90's when I heard someone say that you have to write each book in a series to stand alone. These days with internet fandom, we'd say 'You wanna know what's going on? Go back and read the first one you cretin!'
The first half of the book rehashes so much it was painful. Add to that, the characters were asking stupid questions. Like just to talk. I almost put the book down.
But here's the thing, the ending, which is long, like the last third, is wonderful. Gripping and emotional.
I'm going to give the series one more book to see if it fits.
