I felt Mash Mania was better written than the ones written by Butterworth, but I still didn't enjoy it that much. It feels like Hooker was trying very hard to say "no, Hawkeye isn't the goody-two-does liberal they show on T.V."

In Spruce Harbor he is a hard right-winger. I don't think I have ever read the N-Word so many times. There were also slurs against Poles, Italians, Natives, and southern whites.

He also speaks poorly against the born-again Christians.

I guess that was supposed to be funny?

My Aunt Maryls gave me this book last December (but not for Christmas?) I started reading it in January and finally finished it now. Really it reminds that one of the things I really love about library books, due dates. So I couldn't give it 5 stars because if it was that great, even without a due date I'd be done by now, oh well. Still pretty good.

basically AJ Jacobs decides he's going to try to take the bible literally (think "don't shave your beard" "don't were mixed fibers" "keep the word of God at your finger tips") in an attempt to mock Christianity.

Jacobs is over Jewish decent but he's "about as Jewish as Olive Garden is Italian" in his own words.

Through the year he really finds God, though he resists the urge to truly become born again (he got damn close with the snake handlers). I think it would be good for mainline Christians who think that evangelicals take things too literally, it is good for evangelicals who think they know everything God has to say, I its good for atheists who see it all as hog wash. But it still leads something that we need to do. It still needs the extra push. To find God in what appears to be ridiculous, and to find ridiculousness in the love of Christ.

The book claims to be humor, thought I didn't find it funny, take that as you like. I still felt it was 4-star worthy.

There were two parts towards the end that were hard for me, circumsing his son, and shaving his beard.

Not extremely memorable. Its standard Evangelical "then I gave my life to Jesus" story. Not bad, just not good

I think this book was all in all pretty good. A lot of items seem to correspond with general "hippie" raising of kids, NVC, etc.

I had to return to the library before I actually finished (I think I've been spending too much time arguing on the internet lately). I will plan on getting a copy of my own, hopefully second edition, primarily for a reference when things go crazy because as I said the Internet is distracting.

I can only give 3.5 stars because (1.) I didn't finish it yet, so it could get horrible (2.) The editing was very poor, I hope second edition fixes that, (3.) there were too many "ads" for other books in the book. While I have no problem referencing other works, but (Call 1-800....to order a catalog) does not belong in the body of the work, and continually referencing your own work I think is bad form. This too I suppose could be fixed in second edition

On Anarchism was a collection of short essay that wasn't really what I was expecting. I was hoping for examples, or at least ideas, of how anarchism would actually work in the real world. How we'd get from an idea to a product without a profit motive. What I got instead was basically a label for my wife. She doesn't think governments should exist but while they do she supports a large welfare state to take care of the people. Chomsky appears to be the same.It was well writen and well cited, and otherwise awesome if I had gone in with different expectations it might be getting a 5 instead of a three.

If someone has a recommendation for a different book on anarchism that actually answers my questions I would appreciate it.

I wanted to buy a copy of one of my children favorites. It wasn't quite as entertaining as I remember, but the pictures where better, I was pleasantly surprised to find they were done by Robert Lawson

I don't normally review cookbooks, but this one was necessary. Earlier this year my doctor recommended I take up a primarily Mediterranean diet to help with my heart failure and obesity. I picked this cookbook up from the library because it sounded like a good place to start. This is the only book I ever liked so much that I purchased a copy before the library book was even due. So far we have liked every recipe we've tried in the book, and in the 6 weeks I've been using it as my primary source of meals I've lost over 20 lbs., and my blood pressure has remained in check. I'm only giving 4 stars rather than 5 as Paravents isn't actually the best author. In particular in the introduction part, she talks about how to grocery shop and includes that when choosing whether to purchase something ask yourself if someone on a Mediterranean village would have this in their kitchen. I'm a Midwesterner I have no reference for what they would have in their kitchen. It's the 21st century so I assume we all have access to the same groceries. Also, in one recipe she completely missed a step. She had us to mix a set of ingredients and set it to the side, but then never said what to do with it later in the recipe.
